FAMILY BENEFIT
Sir, —“Never Satisfied” seems to suffer from the delusion that the family benefit is a “hand-out” from the Government. Nothing of the kind. As I said recently in a letter to “The Press,” commenting on a similar statement in a leading article, people have a right to what they pay for. Family benefit and the other social security benefits are paid for by the social security charge on income. These statements of “Never Satisfied” and others are merely preliminaries to a full-scale attack on social security and the welfare state. This letter of “Never Satisfied” is also a symptom of how the propaganda of the National Party leaders is beginning' to condition the thinking of their supporters (and others, unfortunately). Let no one forget we pay for our benefits.— Yours, etc., A.F.P. August 11, 1955.
