ZOLA’S “GUILTY”

Sir,—At a time when we have had and are getting a surfeit of news of crime and murders committed in our midst, the play which the Repertory Society is running at present is entirely superfluous even for those whose appetite craves such horrors. Was it necessary for the society to choose this play whose theme is a particularly callous and premeditated murder and worked out in an extremely morbid and depressing way? I, with a number of others with whom I compared impressions, left the theatre feeling that if this was the committee’s idea of a good play we would not be members for much longer. Give us bright, clean entertainment. There is such a wealth of plays from which to choose. —Yours, etc., NEW MEMBER. August 11, 1955.
