MR G. CAMPBELL A doctor who practised in Christchurch from 1898 to 1907, and who was at that time an active member of the Christchurch Golf Club, died, aged 93, at his home in Toronto on July 30. He was Mr Graham Campbell, a member of a prominent Toronto family, and a doctor who practised in many countries. Mr Campbell came to Christchurch from Australia and Tasmania. At that time there were about 30 doctors in Christchurch. He specialised as a gynaecologist, and is recalled as a very active member of the local branch of the British Medical Association. He was regarded as a good golfer, and was a member of the committee of the Christchurch Golf Club at the establishment of its course at Shirley. The club at that time had only a stonecovered paddock at Russley on which to play. It bought and amalgamated small holdings at Shirley, and laid out the course. Mr Campbell was among the principal shareholders in the scheme to finance the project. He became an honorary life member of the club. Mr Campbell was educated in Scotland, and graduated in arts and medicine at‘Toronto and Edinburgh. He was an interne in the Women’s Hospital in New York until 1889, then went to Pretoria as a family physician. He travelled to Japan, Siberia, and China, and worked, on the outbreak of bubonic plague, at the government hospital in Hong Kong. He then visited Australia, and after nine years in New Zealand returned to Toronto, later revisiting South Africa and New Zealand about 1920. He was the benefactor of many educational and medical institutions, and set up a trust fund for local charities. Mr Campbell is survived by his wife, Jane Campbell, and his sister. MR D. B. SMITH “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, August 11. The death has occurred at Featherston of Mr Donald Brock Smith, at the age of 73 years.
