ADDINGTON MARKET

FAT CATTLE DEARER Values For Wethers Lower HOGGETS IN DEMAND With one of the smallest yardings of fat cattle at Addington for a considerable time, prices for steers and heifers improved by about £2 a head. With the prospects for spring growth, •values for store cattle had a tendency to firm. Fat hoggets met a sound market firm on late rates. Fat ewes fully held their own, and at some stages were dearer, but the wether market was inclined to weaken. The market for store hoggets was very much brighter, but ewes—they were generally of poor quality—had a disappointing sale. Only two spring lambs were yarded and they sold at 74s Id and 76s Id respectively. STORE SHEEP A much improved sale for hoggets was the feature of the store sheep market. Warmer weather in the last few days and promising green feed prospects were probably responsible for this strengthening. The yarding was larger than in recent Weeks. A total of 3175, compared witn 1872 last week, consisted of 454 wether hoggets, 328 ewe hoggets, and 320 hoggets in. mixed-sex consignments, 1728 ewes, 12 ewes with 12 lambs, and 321 wethers. The hogget sale was much brighter in tone and wether hoggets in particular looked to be at least 2s to 3s a head dearer and. in cases, more. The quality of the yarding was generally fairly good. Best wether hoggets sold from 64s to 735. good 52s to 58s. and others back to 355. The top price pen, which sold at 735, consisted of 12 Corriedales from J. A Variance (Sefton). FAT SHEEP Yardings of fat sheep totalled 3979, against 3567 last week. The general range of quality was excellent. From the outset it was obvious that prime heavy wethers were not wanted by the trade. As a result, this type of sheep was very difficult to quit and in a number of cases failed to elicit a bid. On the other hand, prime medium-weight wethers sold very freely, tut, notwithstanding this, prices were down 2s to 3s, except over the concluding stages, when prices for this class of sheep improved slightly, finishing on a par with last week. Ewes met with steady competition throughout the sale and values were up by Is 6d to 2s 6d. Wethers sold to £5 2s Id, which was the price paid for seven from W. G. Lilley and Son (Methven), and F. D. Ironside (Pendarves) sold seven at £5 0s Id. Top price for ewes was 65s Id paid to J. Irwin (Rakaia) for nine. The price of 64s Id was paid to A. Kennedy (Loburn) for seven, Band Bros. (Kirwee) for 14, and A. P. Tuer (Hororata) for four. Values were:— Extra prime medium wethers, 86s Id to £5 2s Id. Prime heavy, 85s Id to 94s Id. Prime medium, 72s Id to 82s Id. FAT CATTLE At 241 head the fat cattle yarding was one of the smallest for a very, long time. Choice beef was in short supply and as a result steers and heifers improved by round £2 a head.
