CONTEMPT OF COURT
CHARGE AGAINST EDITOR ADELAIDE, August 10. The Crown asked in the FJull Court yesterday for an order committing the editor of a daily, newspaper to gaol for contempt of Court and fining his paper. Before the Court is Rohan Deakin Rivett, editor-in-chief of the “News.” The Crown Solicitor (Mr R. R. Chamberlain, QC.) said two articles in the “News” had brought very considerable public odium on a Magistrate, which had been calculated, damaged the administration of justice in Courts of summary jurisdiction, and were contempt of the Supreme Court. The alleged offences relate to two appeals by convicted persons against sentences im posed on them in the Adelaide Magistrate’s Court. In an affidavit the assistant Crown Prosecutor (Mr E. B. Scarfe) said that while the appeals were still pending, articles had appeared carrying the headings “Magistrate Criticised” and “The Quality of Mercy.” The Crown claimed the articles were likely to prejudice fair hearing of the appeals. The hearing is unfinished.
