OBITUARY

MR F. C. MALAQUIN Mr Frederic Charles Malaquin, who died recently at Hanmer Springs, will be remembered by former servicemen who passed through the Queen Mary Hospital as the instructor in joinery m the occupational therapy department of the hospital. Mr Malaquin served with the Rifle Brigade in the First World War. Always keenly interested in fire brigade work—he had as a boy joined the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade as a messenger—he was one of the founders, and first superintendent, i Present Hanmer Springs Volunteer Fire Brigade. He held the gold star for 25 years* service and was a life member of the brigade. He wa s a l so in charge of fire services at Queen Mary Hospital until his retirement because of ill-health, in 1953. Mr Malaquin had been a member of the executive of the Hanmer Springs Progress League, a member of the Hanmer Springs school committee and a member of the board of managers of the Hanmer SpringsPresbyterian Church. He is survived by his widow and family—Mrs W. J. Cronin (Christchurch), Mrs N. Taylor (Hastings), Mr R. I. Malaquin (Cromwell), and Mr N. D. Malaquin (Hanmer Springs).
