U.S. TOURISTS TO NEW ZEALAND

“FLOW HAS INCREASED STEADILY ” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 27. “Rather extravagant” was the comment of the General Manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department (Mr R. W. Marshall) on a statement that New Zealand had “successfully killed the United States tourist trade.” The publicity manager of Tasman Empire Airways, Ltd, (Mr P. Allender) told Auckland businessmen yesterday that New Zealand had killed the tourist trade with its hotel conditions. “The flow of American tourists to New Zealand has increased steadily over the last four or five years,” said Mr Marshall. “Certainly we are not in a position to launch a largescale advertising campaign because of ojr hotels, but we are now coping with about 1500 Americans a year.” If New Zealand could offer suitable hotel accommodation, five or six times that number of tourists could be attracted here, Mr Marshall said. “Many thousands of Americans go to Hawaii when only a short flight would bring them to Auckland. Till there is a base hotel at Auckland to receive them, Americans cannot be invited in large numbers,” he said. . ’Tn hotel accommodation, Americans expect a private bathroom with their bedroom, but are not unduly worried about New Zealand meal hours.”
