CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS’; TOURNAMENT

Some fine table tennis was seen when the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s first fixture of the season, a champion of champions tournament, was played. The best match of the evening was the A grade singles final between the South Island champion, V. N. Brightwell, and the New Zealand finalist and Canterbury champion in 1953, T. R. D. Flint. Brightwell attacked with forehand and backhand cross-court drives, but Flint countered well and scored many points with very strong shots. Brightwell won, 21-13, 12-21, 21-16, 13-21, 21-19. Miss J. M. Williamson, the New Zealand women’s champion, impressed with a splendid win over T. Humphries, and she then extended Flint in a match which went to four games. Miss Williamson won the women’s singles by beating Miss J. Cox, fifth on the New Zealand ranking list. Results were:— A Grade Singles.—Semi-final: T. R. D. Flint beat Miss J. Williamson, 14-21, 21-12, 21-17, 21-17; V. N. Brightwell beat J. Armstrong, 21-19. 21-14, 14-21, 21-17. Final: Brightwell beat Flint, 21-13, 12-21, 21-16. 13-21. 21-9. B and C Grade Singles.—Semi-finals: R. Gray beat Mrs J. Browne, 7-21, 17-21, 21-12, 21-14, 21-17; R. R. France beat R. Anderson, 21-14, 22-20, 24-22. Final; Gray beat France, 21-11, 21-7, 21-16. D Grade Singles.—Semi-finals: R. Campbell beat Mrs M. Gillard, 21-10, 21-17, 19-21, 21-12; B. Gane beat Mrs R. Biggs,
