FOUNDATION PUPILS PLAY IN FOURSOME Young golfing graduates filled the Hagley Club’s course yesterday morning, when 120 secondary school pupils who have been attending the classes organised by Mr A. R. Blank as part of the national golf foundation scheme, played a foursome medal match over 12 holes. There were as many girls as boys on the course. In the last fortnight the pupils have had four preliminary classes, and already they can demonstrate that they have learned much. Not the least important, of their lessons has been golf etiquette, and yesteray’s match was heartening to anyone with the interests of golf at heart. The young players showed a good regard for course manners, unlike some of the spectators at Saturday’s Freyberg Rosebowl final, who rushed across greens and through bunkers to see shots played. Competitors had all been well drilled in the care of the course and artificial tees were used for all shots played on the fairways. Some remarkably good scores were recorded for the 12 holes course, which has a standard scratch score of 47. The boys generally easily outclassed the girls. Golf Foundation certificates will later be awarded to all the pupils who took part in this tournament. From next Saturday, the training of the young golfers will be taken over by professionals. At the conclusion of play, trophies were presented by Mr Blank. The results of yesterday’s match were: Boys.—B. Alexander and D. Pennycuick, 64. 21—43; D. W. Vance and J. M. Nicholls, 70, 24—46: K.
