LINKWATER HOTEL BURNED
CAUSE OF FIRE NOT KNOWN
(New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, April 19. The Linkwater Hotel, once the centre of a thriving gold-mining district at Mahakipawa, was destroyed by fire early this morning. No-one was in the hotel at the time. The licensee (Mr Bert Lusty) had gone to Blenheim on business. The cause of the fire is unknown. When the fire was first seen by nearby settlers, the hotel was burning fiercely. Settlers rushed to the scene, but could only stand by helplessly. A wooden building, dating back to the 1880’s, the single-storey building contained about 13 rooms. It was surrounded by a sparsely-populated farming district.
