FORMER CITY ENGINEER
MR A. R. GALBRAITH TO LIVE IN PERTH
'A former City EngWieer, Mr A. R. Galbraith, who is leaving Christchurch to live in Perth, was met by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane,’M.P.), city councillors and senior council officers at morning tea on Tuesday. Mr Galbraith was primarily responsible for the Christchurch airport, said the Mayor. He had looked ahead and appreciated how aircraft requirements would grow. His vision of the need to secure land at Harewood was the greatest thing he had done for the city and New Zealand. Soon after he was appointed in 1952, Mr Galbraith had prepared a comprehensive report on roading. It resulted in the bsteis of the city’s present street arrangements. His roads had been designed for the future and had stood up well. Also wishing Mr Galbraith well* Mr G. Manning, the Deputy-Mayor, said the jcity’s airport would always be l mounment to his vision. The Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) recalled Mr Galbraith’s work for the Standards Institute, of which he had been ths first chairman. The City Engineer (Mr E. Somers), who had come to Christchurch from Perth as assistant-engineer, said Mr Galbraith had always put full trust in his assistants. " 4 Cr. J. E. Tait also praised Mr Galbraith’s work.
