BUS FARES TO BURWOOD HOSPITAL

Sir,—Not long ago I visited an elderly sick person at the Burwood Hospital. My bus fare from the city was 2s return. Added to this were a few shillings for fruit—quite an expensive visit in fact. It came as no surprise, therefore, to learn that many of the inmates receive few personal visitors. Since a great deal is being done for elderly folk nowadays, one ventures to hope that fares to and from hospitals could be subsidised. Surely there could be no objection to some of our taxes being applied to such a worthy cause.—Yours, etc.. MORE VISITORS FOR THE OLD FOLKS. April 14, 1955.

[The managing director of Midland Motorways,- Ltd. (MrL. K. Laugesen) said in his reply: “The fare _for the service compared favourably with those charged by the Transport Board for a.similar distance, with the difference that the public was not called on to pay a rate to meet the cost of operation.”!
