POSTAL DELAYS

Sir, —Last month I had occasion to complain to the Chief Postmaster, Christchurch, that a letter posted at Riverton on February 23, reache’ me on March 9. Of course he regretted the circumstance, but could do no more. A letter to me from the Post-master-General, posted air mail on April 6, reached me on April 13. What is wrong with our postal service?— Yours, etc., HIRAM HUNTER. April 14, 1955. [A Post and Telegraph Department officer said yesterday that if the correspondent produced the envelope at the Chief Post Office his complaint would be fully investigated.]

THE IMPERIAL THEME Sir, —May I please repeat some words just received from an English journalist, A. K. Chesterton. “Because of our neglect of the imperial theme, and the sorry impotence of our general world policy, influences which have already ro.bbed the Crown of India and Burma have been at work in Canada, as also in Australia and New Zealand, hostile to the British connexion. If Britain can now emerge from her pitiable plight and act again as a resurgent Power, the hearts of all men and women of British blood all over the world will rise to her with one accord; and their leaders will be forced to drop what often seems to be their present policy of jettisoning British associations and traditions in return for toothy internationalist smiles.”—Yours, etc.,

E. A. HOTCHKIN-SHAW. April 19, 1955.
