GOLF Match Play In Women’s Tournament At Shirley

The first and second rounds of match play in the Canterbury women’s golf championship tournament at Shirley were completed yesterday. The play was of a better standard than in the two qualifying rounds on Tuesday, and some of the games extended beyond the eighteenth green. The weather was very pleasant, except for brief drizzle in the afternoon. Results:—

First Round.—Miss V. Fleming beat Miss K. Shand, 1 up, at the nineteenth; Mrs J. Andrewes beat Mrs R G. Edward, 5 and 3; Miss A. Murray beat Mrs G. P. Anderson, 6 and 4; Miss E. White-Par-sons beat Miss K. Rutherford, 3 and 2; Miss A. Grennell beat Mrs I. D. James at the twentieth; Miss K. Johnston (Rangiora) beat Miss Susan Grigg at the nineteenth; Miss L. Hillis beat Miss M. Kennard, 4 and 2; Miss H. Buchanan beat Miss M. Donaldson, 3 and 2. Second Round.—Miss Fleming beat Mrs Andrewes, 6 and 4; Miss White-Parsons beat Miss Alison Murray, 1 up; Miss Johnston beat Miss Grennell, 5 and 4; Miss Buchanan beat Miss Hillis, 3 and 2. The first round match between Miss Fleming and Miss K. Shand was fought to a finish and produced some good golf. Second-round Matches miJih ™7’S g .y as *n good form in her match against Mrs Andrewes in the second round. With two birdies in the first she was out In. 37 and was 5 U P at the turn. She increased her lead by winning the tenth, and Mrs Andrewes took ve l? h . ai ??, twelfth. Miss Fleming won the short thirteenth, and the match ended at the fourteenth, 6 and 4 ... lss White-Farsons, in her match with Miss Alison Murray, established an early lead by winning the first three holes. Miss Murray won the fourth with a birdie 4. Miss White-Parsons increased her lead to 4 up. Miss Murray won the ninth and turned 3 down. The tenth was halved, * nd Miss Murray won the eleventh, the twelfth with a birdie, the thirteenth, and the fourteenth, also with birdies, making her 1 up. Miss White-Pars< ns squared the match at Farthest South. Miss Murray won the sixteenth. Miss White-Par-sons won the seventeenth and the eighteenth in bogey 4, to win 1 up. 'ln 14 holes Miss Johnston’s score was one stroke over the par score, and her short approaches were neat and accurate, enabling her to have only one putt on about eight greens. Miss Grennell played consistently, but it was necessary to register birdies to secure a win, and her putting was not consistent enough to enable her to do so.

Miss Buchanan, with a birdie at the third, was 2 down to Miss Hillis after

playing the fifth. She then won three holes in succession, and the ninth was halved, making her 1 up at the turn. The match ended at the sixteenth, 3 and 2.

Shirley Trophy The following were the results of the Shirley trophy competition played on handicap:— First Round.—Mrs Sinclair beat Miss B. Williams, 3 and 2; Mrs J. S. Middleton beat Mrs W. E. Simes, 1 up; Mrs Williamson beat Mrs G. Turrell, 3 and 2; Miss M. Saunders beat Miss M. Sowden at the twentieth; Miss L. Dalzell beat Mrs J. Ensor, 3 and 1; Mrs G. Reid beat Mrs Davey, 4 and 2; Mrs Page beat Mrs J. B. Hay, 2 up; Mrs Hegan beat Mrs Bissett. 2 and 1.

Second Round.—Mrs Middleton beat Mrs Sinclair, 5 and 4; Miss Saunders beat Mrs Williamson, 1 up; Miss L. Dalzell beat Mrs G. Reid, 6 and 5; Mrs Page beat Mrs Hegan, 3 and 1.

First Flight.—Mrs Edward beat Miss Shand, 5 and 4; Miss Rutherford beat Mrs Anderson, 1 up; Miss Grigg beat Mrs James, 9 and 8; Miss Donaldson beat Miss M. Kennard at the nineteenth.

Second Flight.—Mrs W. E. Simes beat Miss B. Williams, 3 and 2; Mrs G. Turrell beat Miss M. Sowden at the nineteenth; Mrs Davey beat Mrs Ensor, 6 and 5; Mrs J. Bissett beat Mrs J. B. Hay, 2 and 1.

A Stableford bogey match was won in the senior division by Mrs W. Toomey on a count-back from Mrs R. E. Alexander. The best scores were:—Mrs Toomey and Mrs Alexander,- 32; -Mrs R. W. Smart, 30; Mrs H. Coxhead, Mrs H. A. Perin, Mrs J. Dempster, and Mrs S. E. T. Crump, all 28. In the bronze division Mrs A. H. Willis won on a count-back from. Mrs T. Hyde and Mrs V. G. Spiller, and on a second count Mrs Hyde won from Mrs Spiller.
