CATTLE FAIR AT ASHBURTON
TOP PRICE OF £27 FOR COWS
Top price at the Ashburton County breeders’ cattle fair yesterday was £27 for nine Aberdeen Angus cow« from K. Ballantyne. Gawler Downs, and the same breeder sold 10 more at £26. These sales were made at the end of the fair, when most buyers had dispersed. Considering the unfavourable weather, the sale was fairly satisfactory. The fair opened in the rain and when prices were well below last year’s rates, but the sale improved after a number of pens had been sold. Many pens of old cows and heifer calves were passed in. The price for heifer calves was £26, obtained by G. N. Grigg, Glengyle, for a pen of 10 Aberdeen Angus, while the top price for steer calves was £22 5s for 20 of the same breed from H. Clark, Riverside.
In a yarding of more than 1600 the breeds were mainly Aberdeen Angus and Herefords, or a cross of these breeds. Steer calves sold up to £l5 for medium quality, to £lB for good, and up to £22 5s for extra good quality. Heifers realised up to £l5 for medium, to £2O for good, and up to £26 for extra good quality.
