PREMISES FOR RED CROSS
PURCHASE OF HOUSE APPROVED TOTAL COST ESTIMATED AT £10,250 A proposal by the executive of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society to buy a house at 33 Cashel street, Christchurch, at a cost of £7250, for the centre headquartan, was approved by a meeting of subcentre delegates yesterday. Alterations will cost about £3OOO. The chairman (Mr A. E. Kincaid) said the two-storey house was about 40 years old, with a more modern brick frontage on the ground floor. It was tenanted, but there was a possibility that the ground floor might be vacated first for use by the Red Cross Society. The main alteration planned was the building of a new kitchen block and food depots for the Good Neighbour Service. The centre had £7500 in its building fund, Mr Kincaid said. There was sufficient land at the back of the property to build a hall later. He understood there would be no objection by the Christchurch City Council to a lecture hall in that area.
The meeting unanimously supported the proposal, and instructed the executive to reach an arrangement with the tenants for them to find other suitable accommodation.
