OVERSEAS LEAGUE IN CHRISTCHURCH
BRANCH NOW BIGGEST IN N.Z.
The Christchurch branch ot the Overseas League has enrolled more new members in the last year than any other branch in New Zealand, and it has become the largest branch in the Dominion, says the branch president (Mr A. I. Cottrell), in his report for the year ended December 31, 1954. The report says the league moved into new rooms in Whitcombe’s Buildings during the year. Thera rooms provided double the former space, and gave an opportunity for building a secretary’s office and kitchen attached to the main room. There was sufficient space also for a Dominion headquarters. Extensive alterations have provided up-to-date rooms. 1 “There is still a large debt owing, . but I have no doubt that our mem- J bers will help us to reduce this," Mr Cottrell says. “We have so tar received a good response to our first appeal, and I am convinced that the debt will be cleared before the current financial year is over.” The report says that the league’s public speaking contest is growing In popularity with the public <d Christchurch. More than 200 attended the last contest, held in the new clubrooms. Most secondary schools took part, the winner being Sybil Mence, of the Christchurch Girls’ High School. The South Island Anal, held in Timaru. was won by Yvonne Looney, of St. Philomena’s College, Dunedin. •
