“MARTIN LUTHER”
Sir, —“P.J.A.” has a peculiar sense of values. He finds it commendable for Luther to marry a nun. Yet, if a Catholic priest today did what Luther did, “P.J.A.” would hold up his hands in horror, and rightly so. Newspapers would broadcast it as yet another scandal in the Catholic Church. Picture the heading, “Priest Runs Away With Nun.” Yet, “P.J.A.” maintains it is charming in Luther. It is not charming in 1955 and was not charming in 1525. Like “P.J.A.,” most of those who glorify Luther know nothing about him save his name. They believe in a legendary Luther, accepting it on trust that he followed the pure Gospel. Their trust has been betrayed. The socalled reformer was but a profligate fanatic. Sincere Protestants today do wish to follow Christ, but the more they do so, the less like Luther they become. —Yours, etc., THE TRUTH. April 19, 1955.
