HIDES AND SKINS MARKETS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 19. Although hides were again slightly weaker at the Auckland auction today, prices for dry and salted sheepskins were mainly steady at previous rates. Prices of hides seldom varied more than one penny from those ruling a fortnight ago, but the general trend was easier. Dry sheepskins were practically unchanged from the levels on March 22. Full-woolled halfbred skins realised up to per lb, with fine crossbreds making up to 42Jd, and medium crossbreds and crossbreds to 40d. Salted sheepskins also showed hardly any variation from a fortnight ago. Competition was again limited. CARPET INDUSTRY The British carpet industry was more prosperous during the last year than probably any other industry in the textile trade, states the annual report of the Federation of British Carpet Manufacturers. The report states that the production of carnets had risen from 38,500,000 square yards before the war to 46,250,000 square yards last year.
