STOCK EXCHANGES VERY KEEN DEMAND FOR GOVERNMENT STOCK A feature of yesterday’s operations on the Christchurch Stock Exchange was the phenomenally strong support for Government stock, in many cases at rates in advance of those ruling when the Easter recess was taken. There were buyers for 21 issues and sellers for only two. This sudden strengthening of the market is comparable with that which seems almost invariably to precede the launching of a new Government loan. The suggestion is, of course, that the Treasury is in the market, for if the present spate of buying strength persists it must inevitably force prices down, leaving not so competitive with any new issue. Markets generally seemed to have a bit of life infused into them, and buying quotations for a larger number of issues were noticeable. Prices of shares dealt in were mostly in sellers’ favour.
