RICCARTON SUB-CENTRE

The report presented at the annual meeting of the Riccarton subcentre of the Red Cross Society showed that members had visited patients at the Burwood* Hospital and helped to prepare vegetables and transport meals for the Good Neighbour Service. Assistance had been given with the house-to-house appeal for the aged, arranged by the Rotary Club, and the Red Cross appeal in which £52 was collected in the Riccarton area, said the report. Members also assisted at the Red Cross market.

The president (Mrs J. Montgomery) appealed for more helpers, and asked for collectors for the next street day in June.

One hundred and forty-one new garments, and 79 second-hand garments were sent to the centre for dispatch overseas, said the report. As well as paying its assessment of £35, the sub-centre gave £32 to the centre’s building fund; £1 to Christmas parcels for Burwood Hospital and Rannerdale Home; 5s for the men in Korea; and £lO to the sub-centre’s sponsored Greek child, as well as parcels of food and clothing.

Mr A. E. Kincaid was the guest speaker, and gave an account of the society’s work. He said there was a great need for the new building which the North Canterbury centre proposed to buy. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs J. Montgomery; vicepresidents, Lady Clark-Hall, Mesdames Foster, Kyle, J. Fazackerley, Vivian, Perry, and Miss Kincaid; secretary, Miss H. Hunter; joint treasurers, Mrs F. Saul and Miss Z. Hepburn; committee. Mesdames Jones, A. Fazackerley, McNab. Wagner, Carleton, Reid, Spalton, Nicoll, Bigwood, Dove O’Brien Barber, - Grant, Wright Gentles, and Misses Carleton and Holmes. *
