BOMBS OR BENEFITS FOR MALAYA
Sir, —Next year’s defence budget is estimated at £25,000,000; and the Prime Minister is talking about send-' ing a bomber squadron recently located in Cyprus, now apparently on the Suez Canal, to Malaya to help Britain blast her enemies in that area.
Surely the time has come for New Zealand to send not bombers to kill men. women, and children by aiding British imperialism and colonialism, but rather the £25,000,000 above mentioned to help raise the living standards of all the peoples in that area. British armaments should be
in Britain and New Zealand armaments should be in New Zealand; for aggression may be defined as putting or keeping your armaments in other people’s Territory. A referendum should be held on the issue, “Bombs or Benefits for Malaya,” and radio discussion between “for and against” experts along with informative columns in the press, should help electors to see both sides.—Yours, etc., N. M. BELL. February 22, 1955.
