STRATO IN FORM FOR MARCH HANDICAP "The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, February 22. 1 A smart sprint by Strato, a candidate i for the March Handicap, and his stable- • mate, the two-year-old Royal Chief filly, < Jewel Royal, was a feature of the work I at Wingatui this morning. The trials were held on the outside of ' the course proper, on a dead track. Strato, ridden by his trainer (P. H. ! Stock), began from the five-furlong peg, and was joined by Jewel Royal (D. Will- ; man) running to the four furlongs. They came home strongly together, and covered i the half-mile in 52 2-ssec, the last three : furlongs in 40sec. Strato, which missed his engagement on 1 the first day because of a bruised heel, 1 had the outer running and the worse of 1 the weights. He looks well forward for 1 his race on Saturday. Lo Night (J. W. Meikle) showed improvement to finish on terms with Milling Bay (B. J. Anderton) over the same i ground in 54sec, the last three furlongs : in 41sec. Kind Wish (H. T. Anderton) was half : a length clear of Soumal (N. Wadsworth), 1 with a length to Count Simper (B. J. ' Anderton), in 54 2-ssec, the first furlong ' in 13sec. Count Simper lost ground in the run home through changing his course. This time was equalled by Bavack Clue (G. A. Campbell), which may have his first race in the Novice Handicap on Saturday. A four-year-old mare by Super, she is out of the Siegfried mare, Senta, a sister to Clova, the dam of Judo. Free Trade (G. A. Campbell) was on terms with Blue Count (J. D. Pankhurst) in 54 3-ssec. The first furlong took 13sec. These times were equalled by Spinning Maid (B. D. Cunningham). Massador (G. Hansen) and Aphelion (J. D. Pankhurst) ran the first furlong in 13sec, and completed half a mile in 55 2Not Asked for Best Exodus (A. N. Didham) was not asked for his best over four furlongs in 55 3- He ran the first furlong in Msec. Ma Heine (D. N. Hadfield) pulled up well at the end of his half-mile in 54sec. His last three furlongs took 41sec. Algiers (A. N. Didham) ran the first furlong in 13sec, and could have improved on his time of 56 2-ssec. These times were equalled by Neptona (B. Blair). Passchenedaele (G. Currie) dashed home from the three furlongs in 41sec, and Red Admiral (N. A. Didham) was given an easy sprint in 42 3-ssec. Two Riccarton horses. Tulagi and Spike Jones, were restricted to easy halfmiles. St. Ninian (N. Wadsworth) gave Flyting (B. J. Anderton) four lengths’ start, and was not extended to finish on terms after five furlongs in Imin 7 2-ssec, the first two in 26 3-ssec. The Boss (G. A. Campbell) and Twin Jet (T. McCutcheon) ended five furlongs together in Imin 8 3-ssec, after covering the first two furlongs in 26 2-ssec. Landon (G. Hansen) and Night Glare (G. Banks) ran the first two furlongs in 27sec, and were not hurried to complete five furlongs in Imin Usee. Spanish Lady (G. A. Campbell) shaded Gallant Peter (J. W. Meikle), with half a length to Pathe (D. N. Hadfield), which had been kept at the rear all the way, in Imin 8 3-ssec for five furlongs. The last three furlongs took 42sec. Solstice (G. Hansen) completed his task over seven furlongs by covering the last three furlongs in 42sec. Field Chief (D. N. Hadfield) was travelling better than Reformed (G. A. Campbell) to be three-quarters of a length clear after six furlongs in Imin 21 4-ssec. The first three furlongs took 38 3-ssec. This was the best trial over a distance for the morning. Ballast (T. I. Smith) ran the first three furlongs in 40 4-ssec, and completed his task in Imin 23 3-ssec. Good as Gold (B. D. Cunningham) and Wise Belle (D. N. Hadfield) were not hurried over six furlongs in Imin 25 l-ssec, the first three in 42 3-ssec. Fleur was given an easy task over the same distance at the rate of 15sec to the furlong. The maidens, On Leave (D. Dawson) and Te Tuea (G. Hansen), ran the first furlong in 13sec, and completed half a mile in 54 3-ssec. This was one of the few gallops on the plough. Bosky was given sound pace work on the same track. Schooling Blue Robe (B. R. Thomson) and Regal Robe (S. Harrington), Kilmacrennan (S. Harrington), and Sivite (B. R. Thomson) were schooled in pairs, and Some Bounder (B. R. Thomson) jumped four flights of hurdles alone. Blue Robe and Regal Robe gave an outstanding display for their limited experience. Sivite gave a good performance in his first effort after a spell Kilmacrennan had his last few races as a steeplechaser, and although he jumped weH, he would have been better
