RACING Detroit Main Winner On Final Day At Westport

"The Press" Special Service

WESTPORT, February 22.

The open event on the final day of the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting today, the Addison Handicap, proved the most interesting contest of the meeting. Small fields robbed the rest of the programme of its interest. Detroit came through at the finish to win nicely from Lights On, whose chances were again not seriously regarded by investors. Teko, which did not receive the best of trails, did really well to finish third. Gold Tip was the smartest away, but Skyzami and Jesse James were soon, disputing the lead with Prim Lady, Detroit and Double Paper handy. Double Paper secured the lead at the two furlongs, where Detroit and Teko appeared to encounter interference. Detroit won narrowly from Lights On. Double Paper was a fair fourth, just ahead of Jesse James and Prim Lady. The Addison Handicap was the second leg of the double. The first leg, the Grandstand Handicap, was won by Inspire. The winning combination paid £l2 13s 6d for £l. Inspire, more discreetly ridden than on the opening day, allowed Tom Bowling and Benalla to do most of the pace-making in the "Grandstand Handicap, and made a well-judged run in the straight to hold off Ptarmigan and Tom Bowling. Costello finished well into fourth place, ahead of Benalla, Chellene, and Merry Medley. Inspire won nicely, but Ptarmigan had to make up a lot of ground for her placing. Dixie Leigh’s Success The most comfortable win of the' meeting, among the gallopers, was scored by Dixie Leigh in the Miners’ Hack Handicap. She cantered home to beat Smartly and Master Penfold. Warm Air, the early pacemaker, held on for a moderate fourth. Dixie Leigh was the outstanding sprinter, and the only double winner among the gallopers at the meeting, apart from Trustworthy. The latter won the Farewell Handicap convincingly from Costello, which ran his best race of the meeting. Peter Bruce, which disappointed in his races on the opening day, finished third. Trustworthy made an excellent dash over the final furlong. Win for Brave Warrior The Novice Stakes resulted in a decisive win for Brave Warrior, which came away nicely from near the straight entrance to head off the topweight, Queenship. The latter was nosed out of second place by Barbara Dare. Barbara Dare finished on well after being unfavourably placed early. Koyal Glade was a moderate fourth, ahead of Seascrape and Silver Sandal. The warm favourite, Colonel Hunt, ran a disappointing race in the President’s Handicap, and finished with little dash after making a fast run at the half-way mark. The race was won decisively by Haughty Chief from the consistent Jesse James and Warm Air, with Karoro and El Capitan next. Haughty Chief was always well placed near the pacemaker, Warm Air, and came away well in the run home. Aglow was left at the post. The totalisator handled £11,896 15s,

compared with £ 15,306 15s on the second day last year. For the meeting the total was £23,866 15s, against £29,751 15s. The track was in good order.
