ABATTOIR CHARGES

RATES FOR SLAUGHTERING INCREASED Increases in slaughtering charges at the City Abattoir, leased to the Canterbury Bye-Products Company, Ltd., were approved by the City Council. The increases will meet increases in wages and also ensure that in future “the abattoir should stand on its own feet and not be dependent on a subsidy from the company.’’ Increases in charges approved were: cattle, 9d a head; sheep and lambs, 2d a head; pigs, 3d a head; calves, 6d a head.

A loss of £453 for the six months ended September 30 last was shown in the working account of the company. In October, the loss was £313 and the company advised the abattoir and reserves committee that it was certain that the loss would continue during November and December.

Last June the company wrote off accumulated losses of £9389 on the abattoir, working.

The increased wages bill amounts to £lB2B a year.
