BURNSIDE ROAD MEMORIAL
ASSURANCE WANTED ON STATE SUBSIDY Steps will be taken by the City Council to raise a loan for £101,073, its share of the cost of the Burnside road memorial highway, subject to an assurance being given that the full amount of the Government subsidy will still be available. The annual charges will be £10,176. The total amount of the joint loan is £135,000. The suggestion was that because of the formation of the National Roads Board, the Government subsidy would not be forthcoming, said Cr. T. H. McCombs. Cr. W. P. Glue said the question was being reviewed in view of the new road financing. The No. 14 Road Council had last Thursday insisted that the subsidy be paid. Cr. J. E. Jones said he had informed the Roads Council that unless the subsidy was given it was doubtful whether the work would proceed. “We weren’t the only ones who objected,” said Cr. Glue. “The Roads Council was unanimous.’’
