BOWLS

NATIONAL WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT

POST-SECTION PLAY IN FOURS

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 4. The first day of post-section play in the fours at the New Zealand women’s bowling championships opened today at Miramar under excellent conditions. Open heads were an almost unavoidable feature of play on the exceptionally fast greens. The greatest attraction of the day was an exciting game between Mrs L. Boles (Auckland), three times a gold medallist, and Mrs R. Rawlinson (Wellington). After lagging just behind her opponent for almost the whole game, Mrs Boles scored the winning point with her last bowl. Sixty-seven teams had qualified for post-section play. Only one of them—that skipped by Mrs Z. Stuart (Motueka) —is from the South Island. It had been hoped to complete the fours tomorrow, thereby leaving one day free for competitors before starting the pairs on Tuesday, but it is now expected that the final of the fours will be played on Monday morning. In order to complete three rounds today, the games were reduced from 25 to 21 ends. Three teams were undefeated in the section play. They were those skipped by Mesdames Wylie (Paraparaumu), Roberts (Herne Bay), and Davies (Grey Lynn).
