Apprentices To Build Full-Sized Garage

Building apprentices at the Christchurch Technical College will, this year, construct a full-sized garage which will afterwards be sold to defray the cost of materials. There should be no difficulty in selling it: several members of the board of governors said last evening that they would be interested. A project was undertaken by apprentices each year, the principal (Mr D. W. Byall) reported. Usually it was to half scale. Last year in building it was a small out-house which a friend of the college bought for a doll’s house. “We cannot rely on such action with half-scale units,” Mr Lyall said. The building instructor has therefore suggested that a full-size garage should be undertaken. The cost would be just under £lOO, and it could probably be sold for more. The work would take a year in cutting the timber from the rough, erection, fitting of hardware, and completion. Mr R. Jones said that there should also be a ready sale for work done in

engineering. This would recover about 90 per cent, of the cost. Such goods were sold already, said the chairman (Mr M. E. Lyons). “I think you will find the average lad is much more interested in doing a real job,” he added. The board approved the garage project. It was also agreed that the college should provide an exhibition of apprentices’ work in all trades at the New Zealand Industries Fair to be held in Christchurch in April-May. Mr Jones said that those responsible should get away from the idea of exhibiting this material behind wire netting. Work should be available fo. handling if desired. It was a good ad vertisement. “Now that Papanui has changed its name, it is up to us to display the work of technical education,” said Mr George Manning. The opportunity should also be taken to bring forward girls’ work, said Mr Lyons.
