DEMOLITION OF CEMETERY CHAPEL
Sir,— h. Gerard’s letter on the Barbadoes street cemetery chapel is the first to suggest a concrete way out of the impasse. I understand that £4OO .or less would preserve this little building for a further 70 or 80 years, and £lOOO, which would enable some rebuilding in a hard wood practically for perpetuity. Was not a recent act of Parliament passed to protect historic sites’ This spot, as some correspondents have said, has an atmosphere of tranquility and peace, much needed in this present day. Let us start a subscription list There are many descendants of old families, whose forefathers are buried in that peaceful place, who would gladly support it. In this country, with its freedom from want and fear, its beauty and its moderate way of life, we owe much to the pioneers. Let us restore the chapel and honour their memoir—why not with voluntary labour?—Yours, etc., HISTORY RELIVED. November 4, 1954.
