RADAR AIDS TO NAVIGATION

INSTALLATION SOON AT WESTPORT (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 4. Westport will be the first New Zealand port to have radar navigational aids. The equipment will be installed within a month. The Secretary of Marine (Mr W. C. Smith) gave this information to the conference of the Harbours* Association of New Zealand at Auckland yesterday. Westport appeared to be the only port keen on the idea, he said. The conference referred to the association’s executive committee “for study” a suggestion by the New Zealand Merchant Service Guild that radar equipment should be installed at New Zealand ports. The guild is to be told that, in the meantime, any approach should be made to the shipowners’ federation. Executive officers, who recommended this course of action to the conference, said they * were uncertain about the liability to boards should an accident occur while a ship was being guided in by port radar.
