TEST FLIGHT BY CONVERTIPLANE
Vertical Take-Off And
Landing (Rec 10 p.m.) SAN DIEGO (California), Nov 2 The Convair fighter “con vertiplane.” btnlt for the United States Navy, made its first level flight successfully today. It took off straight ud, levelled off to fly forward, and finally backed down to an easy landing in a 21-minute night at the Brown naval auxiliary air station near here. The fighter, known as XFYI, was manufactured by the Convair division of the General Dynamics Corporation. No announcement was made of the forward speed reached by the XFYI today. The test was the first mid-air transition to horizontal flight, bithough vertical take-offs and landings have been made since September 1. The XFYI nosed over to level flight at an altitude of 175 feet a few seconds after it had taken off.
