HOUSING AT PA
MINISTER HOPES FOR IMPROVEMENT
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 27. The provisions in the Maori Purposes Bill affecting the tenure of land, would be of assistance to the inhabitants of Ratana Pa, said the Minister of Mpori Affairs (Mr E. B. Corbett) in the House of Representatives this afternoon, when moving the committal of the measure. Many in the pa, he said, had lived in degradation for a number of years, but now the wage-earning capacity of the men was good. With less money spent on drink, the men of the pa should be able to devote more of their money to housing. So long as he was Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Corbett said, he would do everything to help the Maori people to help themselves. The bill and its provisions relating to Ratana Pa xvould not cure every ill, but there was no doubt that if some remedy had not been found to improve present conditions the pa would have had to be eliminated. The bill was set down for committal.
