SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND

Grateful thanks were expressed by Miss M. G. Havelaar at the montMy meeting of the Christchurch committee of the Save the Children Fund yesterday to persons who had sent in gifts of money to buy Christmas parcels for needy children overseas. She said that the packing of the parcels would commence soon and appealed to interested persons to get in touch with her at 20 Jacksons road if they wished to assist.. There was already enough money in hand to btiy gifts for 200 children, she added.

Miss Havelaar reported that she had received many letters from children in Italy, Austria and Greece. She had also received an urgent request for sponsorships for children in Austria and Germany, whose fathers had been in Russian labour camps. Help had also been asked for by the Save the Children Fund workers in Korea. It was hoped to plan a special appeal for funds to help children in Korea later in the year, Miss Havelaar said. It was ■ announced that a quantity of paua shells had been sent" from Kaikoura in response to the appeal to support the international charity bazaar in Paris in November to raise funds for needy widows with young children.
