Spy Suspect Leaps From Window
(Rec. 8 p.m.) TOKYO, August 29. A Japanese Foreign Office official detained on suspicion of passing secrets to a Russian spy, hurtled to his death from a third-storey window today. The Tokyo District Prosecutor’s Office said he had been under interrogation about information allegedly passed to Yuri Rastovorov, the Soviet espionage agent who went over to the Americans last January. The official had just signed a statement when he took off his spectacles and shoes, jumped on to a desk, and threw himself out of an open window, a spokesman said.
One pf three Japanese Foreign Office men suspected of helping Rastrovorov. he was alleged to have accepted between £lOOO and £2OOO from the Soviet agent for information about Japanese-American military relations.
