MUSIC FESTIVAL AT WAIMATE

CHRISTCHURCH COUNCIL’S SUGGESTION (From Our Own Reporter) WAIMATE, August 11. A proposal by the Christchurch Civic Music Council to stage a festival of music in Waimate on September 22 the seventy-fifth anniversary of the borough—Was received with enthusiasm at a meeting of representatives of musical organisations. A committee was appointed to plan the festival The object of the music council was to foster music in Canterbury, said the secretary (Mr L. F. de Berry). The Council had staged festivals at Rangiora and Ashburton. Two choirs would be brought to Waimate from Christchurch—the Orpheus Choir and the Liederkranzchen—together with the choirs from Timaru and Temuka, to take part in the festival with the Waimate Choral Society. The net proceeds would be divided equally among the choirs participating. It was proposed that more than 200 singers would take part, said Mr de Berry. The officials appointed pre:—chairman, the Mayor, Mr W. F. Boland; treasurer, Mr L. J. Collins; committee, Messrs R. S. Brown and D. S. Mclnnes, Miss Menzies, Mesdames L. Bell, and A. J. Mcßae, with power to add; decorations committee, Mesdames Macdonald and Ball.
