FISH IN VICTORIA LAKE

1000 TO BE LIBERATED DURING SEASON One thousand fish will be liberated in Victoria lake in Hagley Park by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. Commenting on the report of the fish committee to a meeting of the society’s council last evening, Mr H. B. Soanes said that the society had a chance to get young people off the streets. If the lake were in America there would be no argument about looking after it for the children. The lake should be reserved for fly fishing only. Professor E. Percival said that the fish should be in good condition. An amendment to the report was unanimously supported by the council, and during the season loads of fish will be liberated in the lake when it seems necessary. An electric fishing machine had proved most successful when seeking young quinnat in the Heenan stream last month, said Professor Percival. Although the investigations with Mr A. M. R. Burnett had yielded no quinnat in the stream, about 70 young rainbow, brown parr, and smolrs were obtained. at the rate of one fish for each yard of stream. The device, with a generator on the bank, and terminals in the water and on a rod, paralysed the fish. They were tapped and inspected for about a minute before they began to recover and were returned to the water.
