PETROV’S FUTURE UNDEFINED

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, July 15. The Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) said last night that the future of Vladimir Petrov was “quite undefined.” Mr Menzies said this in answer to questions at his press conference. A reporter had asked Mr Menzies about the payment of £5OOO to Petrov on the day he obtained political asylum in Australia. ■ Mr Menzies: I thought the Royal Commission had set out to inquire into this. I was not a witness before the Royal Commission. Mr Menzies was asked whether the Government had accepted any respon-

sibility to maintain Petrov on this scale. He replied: I do not know of any responsibility that the Government has accepted. I daresay Petrov’s future is quite undefined. '
