N.Z. AUTO-CYCLE UNION

ROAD SAFETY REPORT TO CONFERENCE A summary of what had been done in motor-cycling in the last 12 months was given by Mr T. R. McCleary, the motor-cyclists’ representative on the Road Safety Council in Wellington, and chairman of the Christchurch combined clubs’ safety committee, at the thirty-sixth annual conference of the New Zealand Auto-Cycle Union. Motor-cycle clubs had started road safety schemes in the first place, Mr McCleary recalled. The council had been impressed with the success of those schemes, and had recommended the establishment of municipal road, safety committees embracing all types of road users as well as chambers of commerce, junior chambers of commerce, progress leagues, Federated Farmers, and motoring organisations. The effect of these schemes should be felt in the next 12 months, when they got under way, Mr McCleary said. Although the Government had not seen its way clear to assist financially, auto-cycle union members had carried on local club road safety committees with considerable success, said Mr McCleary. In the four months before the union’s campaign began at the beginning of last August 460 persons were killed or injured on .New Zealand roads, but«n the next four months the corresponding total was only 379. The union had concerned itself with the possibility of an increase in thirdparty insurance premiums, Mr McCleary reported, and had held discussions with the Commissioner of Transport. Mr McCleary said there was a proposal*' to go before the next meeting of the New Zealand Road Safety Council on July 29 which, if approved, would benefit all learner motorcyclists. The proposal had already been before a sub-committee of the council, which had recommended that it go before the full council. Mr E. Pink, of Palmerston North, was elected a life member of the union. There are only six other life members.

Next year’s conference of the union will be held in Wellington. Officers elected were: president, Mr C. E. Allen (Auckland); vice-presi-dents, Messrs R. Tall (Invercargill), A.
