AVON CLUB’S 50-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP Riding to within two miles of Darfield and back was a gruelling experience for some of the riders who took part in the Avon Amateur Cycling Club’s 50-mil3 senior and junior championships on Saturday. This was the. longest race so far this season. At the turn the scratch men had made up 10 minutes of the 17 they were giving the front ■ markers, but they lost their chance of catching the leaders. by inconsistent riding; they had bursts of up to 30 miles an hour and then dropped back to as low as 16, while those in front were keeping a steady 23 miles an hour. G. Painter won the senior championship, and M. Doyle, who was riding in his first race, narrowly won the J. H. Stewart Shield, an event which was run in conjunction with the championship. Results:— M. Doyle (17min), 2hr 21min 49sec, 1; E. Burnett (12min), 2hr 16min 49.25ec, 2; H. McGahey (12min), 2hr 16nin 49.45ec, 3; A. Hall (12min), 2hr 17miri 34sec, 4; G.
