New Plymouth’s Last Trams
The last tram will run at New Plymouth, the last town outside the four main centres where they are still operated, on July 23. The city council’s transport com ittee plans to make it an occasion to be remembered. That night it is proposed to close the main street to vehicular traffic for two hours, have three bands on parade, and then, after valedictory speeches, to suspend the fixed time-table and use all available trams to carry passengers fpee of charge until the time the tram service would normally end. Then the junketing will end as buses take over the running on the municipal transport services. New Plymouth’s first tram began running in March, 1916.
