CAR RELIABILITY TRIAL
DRIVERS JUMP FROM BURNING CAR - I (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 18. Two drivers in the Redex reliability trial jumped from their burning car just before it blew up yesterday. The car caught fire as it neared Koonalda, South Australia. The drivers, A. O’Shea and W. Wright, of Sydney, saved only their clothes and a pair of binoculars. They lost about £l6O in bank notes. The cause of the fire is a mystery. The two men only had time to jump* clear before the reserve petrol tank exploded. The trial cars entered South Australia yesterday, strung out across the Nullarbor plain on the 943-mile lap from Madura to Adelaide. The crews wjll have a 12-hour rest in Adelaide. The Sydney driver, J. Murray, still leads the field, having Iqst no points. The New Zealand driver, Kim Berge, who was forced out of the trial at Katherine, said in Adelaide yesterday that he will return with three New Zealand driving teams for next year’s Redex trial. He will take a film of the trial back to New Zealand next month.
