23 STUDY AWARDS UNDER FULBRIGHT PROGRAM

WELLINGTON, July 18. The United States Educational Foundation in New Zealand has announced further awards under the Fulbright programme, which provides for United States citizens to come to New Zealand and New Zealand citizens to travel to the United States for study, teaching, or research. The announcement lists nine United States citizens and 14 New Zealanders.

This makes a total of 26 awards to American citizens, and completes this part of the 1954 programme. Awards have been made to 23 New Zealanders this year, and three more awards are at present under consideration.

Teacher Exchanges Miss Lois M. Hoffman, M.A., of Tacoma, Washington, arrived recently by the Oronsay to exchange with Mr Eric N. Ducker, of Tauriko Public School, Tauranga. Mr Ducker will leave for the United States at the end of next month. Miss Hoffman is employed at the Hillcrest School in Hamilton. ( Mr Alan L. Baldwin, 8.A., L 1.8., from Mateo, California, will arrive in New Zealand about the end of August, to exchange with Mr Eric W. Walker, of Redan Public School, Southland. Mr Walker will leave for California towards the end of August. Mr William Nolan, BA, M.Ed., of Richmond, California, will arrive in New Zealand towards the end of this month to exchange with Mr Francis T. Power, of the Avondale Intermediate School, Auckland. Mr Power will leave for California late in August. Miss Theresa L. Ambuel, MBc., of Waldorf College, Forest City, lowa, will arrive in New Zealand about the end of August on exchange with Miss Sylvia M. Millard, B.A. Miss Millard will leave for the United States towards the end of August. Miss Ada P. Beatty, M.A., of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, will arrive in New Zealand about the end of August on exchange with Miss Peggy D. Mottram, Belfast Public School, Christchurch. Miss Mottram will leave New Zealand towards the end of August. U.S. Graduate Students

Miss Josephine Fishel, M.A., of Durham, North Carolina, will arrive by the Mataroa about the end of July to study political science at Victoria university College. Miss Marjorie D. Little, M.A., of Springfield, Illinois, will arrive by the same ship, to study the history of Polynesian and Maori art at canterbury University College and the Canterbury Museum.

Miss Catherine Ellis, 8.A.. of Waltham, Massachusetts, has an award to study economics at Victoria University College. Mr Peter Robinson, 8.A., of Hanover, New Hampshire, has an award to study geology at the University of Otago.

Brasch, M.Sc., of, the Department of Scientific and 'lndustrial Research, Wellington, has grant to take up a scholarship obtained through the Institute of International Education in New York, and tenable at the Institute of Paper Chemistry, Appleton, Wisconsin. Miss Pamela S. Cocks, M.A., who is in the archives section of the Internal Affairs Department, has a travel grant to enable her to take up a scholarship at the American Uhiversity, Washington, D.C., where she will study archives administration. Mr John W. Dawson, M.A., who is in the botany department of Victoria University College, has a travel grant to take up a teaching assistantship at the University of California, Berkeley, California. Mr John R. Fitzmaurice, 8.E., of the Auckland Metropolitan Drainage Board, has a travel grant to take up a scholarship at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Miss Margaret E. Hankin, B.H.Sc., second assistant dietitian for the Auckland Hospital Board, has an award to enable her to take up a scholarship obtained through the Institute of International Education and the American Home Economics Association at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Mr William B. Harland, BbA, of the External Affairs Department, Wellington, has an award to enable him to take up a scholarship at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy,. Tufts College, Medford, Massachusetts. Mr Michael Nelson, M.Sc., of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, has an award to enable him to take up a research assistantship at Oregon State College. Miss Patricia R. Roberts, M.Sc, of Christchurch Girls* High School, has an award to enable her to take up « scholarship obtained through the Institute of International Education,, at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. Mr David W. H. Shale.
