BURWOOD RECORD BROKEN

GQIF

SPECTACULAR ROUND BY D. C. WATSON The record for the Burwood course was lowered by three strokes yesterday when D. C. Watson (Russley) returned a spectacular 66, six under the standard scratch score, in a match against another Russley player, F. W. Williamson. The previous record was 69, set about two years ago by A. R. Blank, who laid out the course. On the outward half, Watson was only once over scratch, and he had two birdies to turn in 34. Then came five birdies in nine holes and a second half pf 32. Watson, playing with remarkable ease, was able to one-putt five greens. Another prominent Canterbury player, M. W. Stanley, who was a sort of playing umpire, also had a fine round. After being 37 at the turn, he came home in 33. Watson's was an extraordinary feat, for although Burwood is only 6080 yards m length, many of the holes demand a very carefully-placed drive, and the greens are not very large. Mr C. G. Penlington, vicepresident of the New Zealand Golf Association, said it was the finest round he had seen in' many years, because Burwood was a very good course but a tough one and a real test of golf; Both* Watson and Stanley were members of the Burwood club when it began, but it is many years since they played there regularly, and some time since either had been on the course. Watson’s figures, described by Mr Blank as being “good enough to beat Von Nida,” were:— „ Outward— S S S—3, 4,5, .3, 4,4, 3,4, 5—35 Watson—3, 4,4, 3,5, 4,3, 4, 4—34 Inward— S S S—4, 4,5, 3,5, 3,5, 3, 5—37, 35—72 Watson—3, 4,4, 3,4, 3,4, 3, 4—32, 34—66
