THOMSON TO PLAY IN CANADA

Peter Thomson, the 24-year-old Australian professional who won this year’s British open golf title, has accepted an invitation to play in next month’s Canada Cup matches, a spokesman for the International Golf Association said today. His partner in the event has yet to be named. New Zealand has also named one of its representatives—E. D. Fennel]. A field of 92 professionals from 26 countries is expected to play for the 5000-dollar cup. The tournament is to be held at the Laval-sur-le-Lac Golf Club, near Montreal, from August 20 to August 22. Members of the teams each play 72 holes of medal golf. Players have their expenses paid, and are given a 500-dollar honorarium. Tournament officials estimate the cost of this year’s matches at 100,000 dollars.
