TASMAN PLANE SERVICES
PROPOSED USE OF OHAKEA “THOROUGH STUDY” BY GOVERNMENT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 18. The Government will not make a decision lightly on the application by Tasman Empire Airways for the use of Ohakea as a civilian trans-Tasman terminal.
This assurance was given by the Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr T. L. Macdonald) yesterday. He said that the question was being thoroughly studied by the Civil Aviation Administration and the Air Force. After a report had been made by departmental officers, he would make a recommendation t 6 the Cabinet. There were factors involved which the ordinary members of the public probably did not know, the Minister said. He could give no indication at this stage when he would be able to place a recommendation before the Cabinet. If. the Cabinet agrees to the application by Tasman Airways in its entirety, and three flights a week are operated from Ohakea, some reductions will be made in the number of flights from either Harewood or Whenuapai, or from both. The chairman of Tasman Airways (Sir Leonard Isitt) refused to comment on this matter today. He said the question would arise if and when a decision was made by the Cabinet.
