REPAIR OF JUMPS DURING RACES

ASHBURTON PROPOSAL REJECTED (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 16. A move aiming at the replacement of fallen panels in jumps in hurdle races and steeplechases was not supported by the majority of delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference today. A remit from the Ashburton County Racing Club sought the approval of the meeting to recommend to the executive committee that a law be framed allowing that action to be taken. It was lost on the voices. The Ashburton Club’s spokesman, Mr J. H. Grigg, said that the panels in jumps were replaced in the National Hunts’ races in England and Ireland; if it was done in New Zealand, a lot of crowding in going for the gap would be avoided. There was a risk of accident when the panels were allowed to stay on the ground, Mr Grigg said. Another delegate said it would be difficult at times •to re-erect the panels quickly enough, becausg the support for the hurdle was often knocked over.
