RELATIONS WITH U.S.

Sir, —In answer to a defamating and scurrilous attack upon the Royal Navy, in which so many New Zealanders have served, I was prompted to reply. It would now appear from the letters of “Apteryx,” “Leander” and “Notornis” that the real object of the attack was the British Commonwealth. I am sure that if they had the courage to give their own names, people wpuld be less worried about their motives. “Apteryx,” surrounded in his imagination by a thousand million hostile people, seems to be in a heavy funk. Let us, above all, have courage. Certain people excepted, we all strive for peace. If however, war comes, scientific skill, not numbers of people, will be the deciding factor. If needed, British aircraft could be here within 24 hours. Further, New Zealanders, who, by reason of their qualities of leadership, lead many British squadrons, would probably be flying them.—Your, etc., H. S. HOWELL. July 16, 1954.
