COMPULSORY ACQUISITION OF LAND

Sir, —I am but an ordinary citizen not blessed with much of this world’s goods. I bought a comparatively small area of land in Aranui-Wainoni a long time ago. Ido not want to sell it, but the Government, which had the same chance as I had, and who had not the foresight to do so, now thinks fit to take it from me, and leave me to seek another place to which I do not wish to go. The Government has refused my urging to be allowed to hold it; and while having the- legal right, refuses to pay me a fair price, one which I was offered privately. The Government now is forcing me to go before the Court; and I want to avoid this if possbile. Can there be a forcible protest, as no-one is safe from such high handed abuse of power?—Yours, etc., YET ANOTHER IRATE LAND OWNER. July 15, 1954.
