WEATHER IN MAY
MAGNETIC SURVEY’S REPORT Apart from one week of rain, May was a month of calm sunny days, with the mean temperature 1.8 degrees higher than average, and the total amount of sunshine 17.6 hours more than average, says a report issued by the Magnetic Survey on meteorological observations taken in May. Eleven frosts were recorded compared with the average of 15 and the grass minimum temperature was 2.3 degrees higher than average. For the fifth successive month rainfall was lower than average, 1.72 inches having been recorded, compared with the average 2.84 inches. The rainfall total of 6.17 inches to May 31 is 4.62 inches lower than the average for the first five month of the year. Humidity readings at 9 a.m. were 8 per cent, higher than average. Earth temperatures at 1 foot, 3 foot, and 5 foot were respectively 3.3 degrees, 2.5 degrees, and 1.8 degrees higher than average. Details of observations are as follows: Barometer.—Mean for month, 1015.0 millibars; .highest reading (on May 29) 1029.8 millibars; lowest reading (on May 20 and 21), 985.8 millibars. Temperature in shade.—Mean for month, 49.3 degrees; highest reading (on May 31), 64.6 degrees: lowest reading (on May 27 and 28). 32.7 degrees. Temperature Exposed.—Mean minimum on grass, 35 6 degrees; lowest reading (on May 28), 27.2 degrees. Moisture. —Mean daily amount of clouo (0-8 observed at 9.00 a.m.), 5.1; total amount of rain, 1;72 inches; number of rainy days, 10; heaviest fall (on May 19), 0.80 inches. Earth Temperatures.—Mean at a depth of Ift, 52.0 degrees; mean at a depth of 3ft, 54.8 degrees; mean, at a depth of sft, 56.7 degrees. Sunshine (Recorded at Ha re wood).— Total amount of sunshine. 146.3 hours; mean daily amount, 4.7 hours.
