Mrs M. C. Bean, of 144 Neville street, Spreydon, has been awarded the C. J. Goldsmith Cup for the best preSared speech delivered this year in le annual contest conducted by the Workers’ Educational Association public speaking and debating club. Nurse Paula Brady and Nurse Rose Hatton, both of the Christchurch Public Hospital, have left to do a six months maternity course at Cornwall Park Hospital, Auckland. Mrs D. Macbean Stewart, Merivale, will leave by the Monowai next Thursday to visit her sister Mrs E. W. Manning, Sydney. Mrs H. W. Millard, Fendalton, left last evening for Palmerston North, to visit her parents Mr and Mrs W. M. Sexton, who are leaving soon for England.

Miss J. Trotter, matron of Lyndhourst Obstetric Hospital, celebrated her twenty-fifth anniversary in this position on Wednesday evening by a supper party held at the hospital. More than 60 guests were entertained, including many members of the nursing profession. Three guests of honour had been born at the nospital, including the first baby born there, and each was presented with a gift.

A special general meeting of the North Canterbury area of the British Drama League was held last evening at the Repertory Society’s rooms, to make an amendment to the constitution permitting the annual general meeting to be held at a time considered suitable by the committee. In recognition of her long and devoted service to the league in Palmerston South, Dunedin, Timaru and Rangiora, as well as in Christchurch, Mrs Harriet Smith was elected an honorary life member. The president (Miss Beryl Bigg-Wither) told the meeting that Miss Frances Mackenzie, director of studies of the league, London, was now in New Zealand, and will be conducting drama schools for amateurs throughout the country. Miss Mackenzie will be in Christchurch the last week-end in July. The meeting passed a motion of sympathy with Mr A. E. Lawrence, of Timaru, in the death of his wife. The Rev. C. S. Knight presided over an attendance of 170 parents of third form pupils at a meeting of the Avonside Girls’ High School Parent-Teacher Association. The headmistress (Miss V. Townsend) spoke to parents and emphasised the importance of a check being kept on the tyoe of literature read by their young daughters. Miss J. Herbison, the school careers advised, also spoke on the work of her department. Parents then met staff members and discussed the progress of their daughters. Members of the ladies’ auxiliary served supper. Members of the Villa Maria Old Girls’ Association entertained the debutantes at their recent ball at a gathering held at “Maryknoll,” Cashel street. Miss Colleen Ive, who has recently returned from overseas, spoke of her trip. In an intermediate first aid examination conducted by the North Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society the following candidates passed:— Annette Callaway, Verona Fogg, Valmai McCullough, Morva Readman (H.), Mr Thomas Van Irsel, Averil Ching, Ella McDonald, Mr Donald Odenng, and Audrey Scott. The following candidates passed an elementary examination:—Mr H. Bohnenn, Miss Jean Ferguson, Angela Reid, Mr D. A. Smith, Mr G. E. Dickey, Mrs Katherine Hyndman, and Betty Robinson (H.).

Mr E. R. Field-Dodgson gave a talk on Beethoven’s ninth symphony at a recent recital of the Christchurch Recorded Music Society. A recording of this work, conducted by Arturo Toscanini, was presented as the second half of the programme. Mr W. Poster, a former editor of the society’s magazine who will leave soon for a visit to Britain, was bidden farewell. Today there will be a lovely variety of cakes for the long week-end at the Ethne Tosswill Cake Shop, 123 Cashel street. It is advisable to be early for the best selection. —Advt.
